Simplified ESRS: 60% Fewer Data Points — How to Recalibrate Your CSRD Programme

Published October 2026 | 3 min read | By RSustain UK Advisory Team

The simplified ESRS, adopted by Commission Delegated Act on 3 July 2026 following EFRAG technical advice (December 2025), represents the most significant reduction in EU sustainability reporting burden since CSRD was adopted. For UK companies still in CSRD scope post-Omnibus I, understanding what changed is essential for right-sizing your compliance programme.

What Changed: By the Numbers

  • Mandatory data points cut by 60%+: From over 1,000 under original ESRS to approximately 400
  • 12 simplified standards: Covering the same topics (E1-E5, S1-S4, G1, plus cross-cutting ESRS 1 and 2) but with streamlined disclosure requirements
  • Effective from FY2027: Voluntary early adoption from FY2026
  • Value chain data relaxation: Increased scope for estimates; VSME cap on supplier requests

What Did NOT Change

  • Double materiality: Still required. Impact and financial materiality assessment determines which standards apply
  • EU Taxonomy: Revenue/CapEx/OpEx KPI disclosure still mandatory
  • Limited assurance: Still required from Wave 1 (FY2024) onwards
  • Digital tagging (XBRL): Still required for machine-readable reporting

Impact on UK Companies

If You Were Building a CSRD Programme

Your programme needs recalibrating, not scrapping. The double materiality assessment you conducted is still valid. Your GHG inventory is still needed. But your data architecture should be streamlined to match the ~400 simplified data points rather than the original 1,000+.

Cost Reduction

The simplified ESRS should reduce CSRD compliance costs by 30-50% compared to pre-Omnibus estimates. Data collection, documentation, and assurance preparation are all lighter. However, the double materiality assessment and Taxonomy alignment remain substantive exercises.
