SFDR and UK Fund Managers: The EU Regulation You Cannot Ignore

Published October 2026 | 3 min read | By RSustain UK Advisory Team

UK fund managers and asset managers distributing financial products in the EU face a regulatory obligation that receives far less attention than CSRD: the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR). Unlike CSRD, which underwent the Omnibus restructuring, SFDR remains largely unchanged and continues to apply in full to UK firms with EU distribution.

Who Is Affected?

Any UK-authorised fund manager, asset manager, or financial adviser that distributes products or provides services in the EU — typically through an EU subsidiary, branch, or cross-border marketing — is subject to SFDR. This includes:

  • UCITS management companies distributing EU-domiciled funds
  • AIFMs managing or marketing funds to EU investors
  • Financial advisers providing services across borders

Key SFDR Requirements

Entity-Level Disclosures

Firms must disclose how they integrate sustainability risks into investment decisions, adverse sustainability impact policies, and remuneration alignment.

Product-Level Classifications

  • Article 6: Products with no sustainability characteristics (still must disclose sustainability risk integration)
  • Article 8: Products that “promote” environmental or social characteristics (light green)
  • Article 9: Products with a sustainable investment objective (dark green)

Principal Adverse Impact (PAI) Indicators

14 mandatory PAI indicators covering GHG emissions, biodiversity, water, waste, social matters, and governance. Plus additional opt-in indicators from a prescribed list.

SFDR and EU Taxonomy Interaction

SFDR’s definition of “sustainable investment” interacts with the EU Taxonomy. Article 9 products and Article 8 products making sustainable investment claims must disclose the proportion that is Taxonomy-aligned. This creates a data dependency on portfolio companies’ own Taxonomy reporting.

SFDR Reform

The Commission consulted on SFDR reform in September 2025. Potential changes include replacing the Article 6/8/9 classification with a new product categorisation system. However, as of October 2026, the current SFDR framework remains in force and must be complied with.

Dual FCA + SFDR Obligations

UK firms face parallel obligations: FCA’s SDR and investment labels regime for UK-marketed products, and SFDR for EU-distributed products. The two regimes are not equivalent and require separate compliance programmes.
